In March 2016, Liu Qiuran participated in a project to study the traditional Chinese style painting. The research team went to the ancient capital of Xi'an,Shaanxi Province, to inspect historical relics and record on-site paintings.

Tomb Guardian Beasts are the research topic chosen by Liu Qiuran in this project. She conducted comparative research and painting creations on the modeling characteristics between Tang Dynasty tomb guardian beasts and Northern Dynasty tomb guardian beasts.
